Although it's made out of $35 subs, it still does its job with plenty of punch

Pros:
-VERY loud!!!! The SPL on this box is very impressive for $150

-Box styling and lights are very cool

-The ladies love it

Cons:

-While it has a pretty large x-max, the coils overheat pretty easily with too much power, so you have to be careful to not push them too hard

-The sound quality is very low for anything other than rap or hip hop. The bass is very boomy with almost no definition for short kicks like a bass drum

Nothing But Blu Skies : Panasonic DMP-BD80 High Clarity Audio Blu-ray Disc Player, Black

I switched to this player from an earlier Samsung model. The Samsung almost turned me off from blu-ray completely, with its endless problems in playing blu-ray discs.

By contrast, this player is a pleasure.

It was extremely fast to set up. Plugged in the power (which, unlike many players, is a detachable power cord. This means if you are jamming the cord through a hole with a bunch of other cables, as I was, it is easy because you don't have to get the plug to go through the hole, just the small end of the cord). Plugged in an HDMI cable. Plugged in a network cable.

Turned it on. It asked a few questions. It discovered my network and connected without trouble. (It autodetects firmware updates, which is way nicer than my older player in which i had to burn firmware dvds and then go through a painful update process.)

It asked whether i wanted to have the instant on feature, which it kindly defaults to the greener "no" option.

And then, boom. Done. Popped in a blu-ray that failed on the samsung, loaded very quickly and started playing, with a very very crisp picture and lovely sound.

Haven't tried the bd live features yet (waiting for sd card to arrive), and it doesn't take sony memory sticks, butalready it has brought back pleasure into video viewing.

Because it supports DivX, I've also been able to get rid of a secondary LG player I had just for that purpose.

Altogether, I'm a happy camper and watching movies again.

Not Bad for what it is! : Philips DCP850/37 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player with iPod docking

I've seen this unit on sale at many super-stores for $149 and it is definitely worth it. I originally had the Sonic Impact video 55. That unit had a pretty good picture and AWESOME sound. The problem though, was that it was cheaply made. The video screen failed on me on 3 units!!! Good thing I had an extended warranty at the local super-store where I bought it. On the 3rd try, the salesman ask if I wanted to exchange it for another model. Now I have the Philips and couldn't be more happy with it. What I like is that it plays Divx files, AVI files, SVCD, MP4, MP3 and cds. Usually, I would download a movie from the internet (veoh.com) and convert it to my video ipod using CucSoft. This was a pain to do. Now, I can just copy my Avi's and burn them to a cheap CD and play it on my Philips DVD player, saving space on my iPod. I use the video iPod to watch podcasts on the Philip's bigger screen. On video quality, the quality of the iPod video is as can be expected. They are compressed videos after all. Still, pretty good picture, about the same in quality as the Sonic Impact Video 55. Sometimes the Sonic Impact would looked washed out to me. DVD quality is very good to me. I fired up the Rocky Balboa DVD and the Justice League series I got from Amazon and both look very rich....better than the videos from the iPod, which is understandable. The Rocky Balboa DVD is about 5 gigs and I can compress it to fit the video iPod and it would only be about 700 megs. Because of this, the ipod videos aren't as sharp.
The only negative I give of this unit is the speakers. They sound tinny. Watching movies, it is okay for what it is, but I was spoiled with the Sonic Impacts deep bass and LOUD speakers. I even used it solely as a music player at a picnic. With the Philips, playing music on it is like playing music through a cheap FM/AM radio. I haven't tried the headphones yet, though.
Another note: I've copied lots of movies from Veoh.com and burned them to a DVD and played it on my Philips and outputed it to my 55 inch television. Awesome! Good quality and free stuff. You can't beat that!

I found installation super easy. When you hook up the iPod, the stereo should be off, hook up the iPod, give it a few seconds to jump through startup, then press CD until CDCH (CD changer) displays. There were days when I couldn't get the CD changer to display, and had to use my tape deck adapter. The best part is that it always uses the same volume, dispite the volume level displayed on the iPod. Before shutting the car off, you must turn off the stereo, otherwise the iPod will keep playing and charging off the car battery. The aux and the iPod cannot be played simultaneously, so a GPS and iPod cannot both be played with this product.

For their part, the 2 speakers built into the SIR-BB1 are pretty decent. They're not strong in the bass department, but we wouldn't call their sound thin, either. Overall the unit's sound is even-keeled and extremely listenable, much better than the sound from systems that try to squeeze more bass out of their speakers than the electronics can credibly handle. To that end, we were impressed with how loudly the boombox plays, and with minimal distortion--even on a seemingly meager 5 watts per channel (x 2). Use of the headphone jack disables the speakers, but an auxiliary audio output would have permitted integrating the boombox with a powered subwoofer. At this price, though, it's hard to justify a complaint about the absence of an output. You'll need to position the boombox in a place where it can readily lock to a satellite transmission, which we found easily. Several spots worked fine, and even a west-facing window obstructed by a large cherry tree proved sufficient. When reception gets hazy due to weather conditions or satellite positions, the audio program mutes briefly rather than getting fuzzy or more distant-sounding, as it would with an analog FM-radio signal. This can prove annoying, but in our lengthy evaluation, brief lost-signal mutes were infrequent at most (to the tune of 1 or fewer mutes per hour). There's no remote control for the boombox. The receiver comes with one, but it doesn't control audio level, so while you can still change stations and browse genres from the receiver's remote, you can't turn the boombox volume up or down. This box has clear sound from the lowest setting to the highest. The volume is loud enough to fill a room, or at poolside, so no complaints there. It isn't as loud as a traditional CD boombox but I didn't expect that.

The beauty of this isn't the sound however, but what it allows you to do with Satellite radio by taking it places you wouldn't otherwise. Having tunes at poolside or at a barbeque makes it all worthwhile. Also comparing it to the competitors product, this one is of higher quality and has nice metal covers to protect the speakers instead of the cloth that rips on the SkyFi boombox.

So I give it 5 stars for what it allows me to do with Sirius Satellite Radio, but certainly would like to see improvements in next generation equipment to get better battery life.
